VTC establishes the Hong Kong Design Institute
Worldwide Logo Design Competition invites application

To support the growth of the creative industries, and the associated manpower demands, the VTC has decided to bring together its three design and related departments and establish the "Hong Kong Design Institute"(HKDI). The Design Institute Advisory Board announced today the launch of the worldwide Logo Design Competition for the HKDI to promote the brand of the Institute.

The Honourable Andrew Leung, Chairman of the Advisory Board, said under the VTC, a wide range of design courses were provided by the three very strong academic departments in the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE) located in Sha Tin, Kwai Chung and Kwun Tong. They were the Department of Design of IVE (Sha Tin), the Department of Fashion & Textiles of IVE (Kwai Chung) and the Department of Printing & Digital Media of IVE (Kwun Tong). Each of the campuses had its outstanding and specialist feature in the realm of design. There were many talents among the students from these departments and numerous prizes and awards were won by these students in local and overseas competitions. The integration of the three departments in IVE served to maximise their impact, facilitate multi-disciplinary development, pool resources and expertise and foster synergy.

He further pointed out that the HKDI was a project of academe-industry collaboration, with strong network building with regional and international institutions. The objectives were to support a world class foundation design education for the nurture of design talents in Hong Kong and the world.

The VTC formed the Design Institute Advisory Board to oversee the establishment of the HKDI. Renowned design professionals, industrialists and academics were invited to sit on the board to provide the steer and input.

Mr Freeman Lau, a renowned artist, brand designer and Vice-Chairman of the Board, said the Logo Design Competition represented the first step of the Institute to pave the way for its road to the top position of the world.

Mr Lau will be the Judge Chair of the Competition, and the other judges included Mr Bo Linnemann and Mr Willi Kunz, both internationally renowned brand design consultants, Mr Don Ryun Chung, Professor of Branding and Design Management Studies of Hongik University, Seoul, and Dr Carrie Willis, Executive Director of VTC.

The Logo Design Competition is calling for entries. The submission deadline is 31 March 2006. Results will be announced in May next year.
